Lefkada is an island of great spiritual tradition. Its geographic position has provided a closest relationship to the West at the period when the Continental Greece was suffering the spiritual dark ages of the Turkish Domination.
The individual civilization and the unique character of this island that is surrounded by the sea and the trees gave it the opportunity to bear and breed some great luscious souls. Here were born or had lived great artists and scientists with panhellenic and worldwide recognition and publicity such as Lefkadios Hern, the great litterateur from Lefkada who emigrated in Jaman and with his works made the "Country of The Rising Sun" and its civilization famous to the west and is considered as Japan's national writer. Aristotelis Valaoritis was also a great lyrical whose poetry is vibrating by the love to the country, freedom and the admiration to the heroes of the Greek Revoloution, Aggelos Sikelianos was the inspirator of the Delphic Idea and a great lyrical poet and mystic with ecumenical vision who compromised in his poerty the ancient Greek with the Christian values resulting to become panhuman. Agni Baltsa is also a great lyrical artist mezzo-soprano with remarkable international career.
Individual characteristic of the natural environment of Lefkada Island is its great variety in flora due to the high percentage of rainfalls that describe its climate and has developed a remarkable wealth of vegetative species that impresses the visitor. Plants of singular beauty like "paionies" at the highland terrains or in Pagrati that flush the coastline through Arenaria is only a small part of what the visitor and the specialist grub-hunter as well will come by, at the same time the traditional cultivation of the olives and the grapes are creating extended zones of color alterations, especially of the green shadings that joined to the limpidness of the blue sea are leaving a sense that is impressed in memory. The lagoons of Lefkada Island consist of unique biotopes, especially from winter until spring that pulse with life as they fill with crowds of emigrational birds. Except of the seagulls that resort permanently every year other birds also arrive like loufes, cranes, cygnuses, green-head ducks, kalamokanades and many other small birds and water fowls.
An island like Lefkada could not lack of numerous important monuments and sights. Agia Mavra's Castle towering at the entrance of the island is one of the most imposing medieval buildings and is consists of a template of the fortification works of its age. Nirikos area has been nominated as an archaeological area as here was the ancient city of Lefkada and contains relics of its enclosures that are dated from the archaic since the Romaic years, the two ancient burial grounds, solitary monuments and structural remains like tombs, cottages and marine diggings. At Nidrios plain, the area extended from the foothills of Skaros Mountain through Magemenos place in Nikiana area has been also nominated as an archaeological ground and contains tombs of the proto-Helladic period, boxy and tiled sepultures. The thyme-honey, pasteli and nougat, orgeat and liqueur like "Rozoli", the roe from ivari fish of the lagoon, the red and white wine are all products of Lefkada that each should taste. Especially the wine is produced by the special grape variety of "Vertzami", one of the most important in Greece as considered. Other great varieties of Lefkada's wine are the black and sweet "Giomatari" and the white and lager of "Keropati", the smooth and light wine. The fishes and generally the water products are of excellent quality and are coming from the surrounding bays and the Ionian Sea, most of the times fished with traditional methods. But the thing that captivates the visitor is the local handworks, the textiles and the famous fancywork of unique beauty.
