The cosmopolitan island of Kerkyra is one of the most beautiful Greek islands. The combination of the natural environment and the beautiful sea that surrounds Kerkyra render it as a perfect place for vacation and relaxing for the everywhere lovers of the green and the blue. Our exploration begins from the picturesque city of Kerkyra. At the entrance of the fortress we can admire the imposing statue of the German marshal Mathias Von Schulenburg, assembled by the Venetian honoring him for his services during the siege of Kerkyra at 1716 and next is the impressive palace of Agios Michael and Agios Georgios, of the Georgian architecture type, maybe the most glorious masterpiece of the English Era. At its top we can see the symbols of the Ionian Islands created by the Porsalenis, sculptor from Kerkyra and at the yard we can also see the statue of the English resident Adams, made from the same sculptor.
An individual piece of neoclassical architecture is the building of the old prefecture, made by Chronis, the architecture and built at the same place where Ioannis Kapodistriasm, the first governor of Greece was born and the Reading Society of kerkyra that hosts rear editions and valuable documents and a huge collection of paintings and pictures while a visit at the St. Georges Chapel, of the Dorian architectonic rhythm also worth.
According to the tradition St. Iason and St. Sosipatros where students of Saul amd spread the Christian religion on the island. Our trip follows at the Museum of Asian Art that contains important works of art from China, India, Japan, Siam and Tibet that cover a long period from 1500 b.C. until the 20th century and from there we head to the double-aisle Cathedral of St. Spyridonas. The high campanile, the marble temple and a part of the roof are some completely interesting elements just like the relic of Agios Spyridon, the patron Saint of the island, that is kept in a big reliquary made in Vienna.
Our trip is continuing at the nature of Kerkyra. This island has a natural environment of unique beauty that looks like a continuously changing painting with its shades of green and blue and the multicolor brushstrokes.
The staggering agricultural scene with the forest lands and the verdant olive groves at the selvages of the hills that reach the beaches of the islands accompanied the lacy beaches and the hospitable coasts compose an esthetic totality of singular beauty. At the mountainous space of Pantokratoras we can see forest lands, places with panoramic view and intensive geological schematisms like the couple of caves at Klimatia and Loutses respectively. The characteristic mountainous flora includes oak forests, places that are alternated with cultivable terrains with olives and grapes, while the rocky and stony side of the mountain that consists of a supplier of the famous stone from Sinio is singularly imposing. The countryside has many springs of potable fresh water of excellent quality at the areas of Nymphes, Kyprianades, Klimatia, Valanio and Agioi Douloi and at the north you will find two impressive cataracts, a rear scene created by the water that falls of the hegight of at least 15 meters.
At the laggon of Korissia the two realms of cedar-forests are dominating, literally sprouted inside the snad while perch on the catalogue of the wild flowers of Kerkyra have the 36 kinds of uncultivated orchid.
Numerous water organisms are found at the sea of Kerkyra. Major are the fishes and the water mammals. Traveling at the waters of Kerkyra you may easily meet groups of dolphins playing at the surface of the sea while singular is the presence of the Careta Careta water tortoise and the Monahus Monahus seal that lives at the desolated secluded grottos of the Kerkyra's islands.
Big reference has also to be performed to the grove of Paloipolis (Mon Repo) where, in the past, have been transefered and replanted many local species that joint to the endemic species consist of a historic and living herb garden.
The island has also many wonderful beaches and scenic voes where the visitors can swim in limpid waters and to relax under the warm sun. At the north part of the island recommended are the beaches of Palaiocastritsa, Agios Georgios, Arilla, Peroulades, Sidari, Acharavi, kalami, Dasia and at the western and eastern part the beaches of Mon Repo, Benitsa, Glyfada, Agios Gordios and the south part the beautiful beaches of Messogi, Morahitika, Agios Georgios, Issos and Kavos.
