The quiet and picturesque island of Donousa fascinates the lover of the sea and the isular landscape. Its' small size combined to its limpid beaches and the Cycladic tone seduces its visitor to reflections clearly Greek, Aegean.
There are four villages in the island whereof Stavros is the port and the leeward capital. Here you will find and one of the most spectacular beaches whereas if you own a craft you can secure it to the smaller, recently constructed jetty at the interior of the port.
At Stavros you will find taverns, mini markets, bakery, cafeteria, bar, ticket agency, gift shops, lodgings and of course the church of the Stavros and Panagia (Church of The Holy Cross and the Holy mother).
The rest of the villages are Messaria, Mersini and Kalotaritisa with the church of Saint George, 3 unique small beaches and a picturesque tavern. In Mersini you surely have to visit the fount that springs under the perennial platan near the church of Agia Sofia.
For swimming you will be astonished from the exquisite, sandy beaches with the sea green and limpid waters at Stavros, Kedros, Fikio and Kalotaritisa. At the bottom of Kedros sea shines the wreck of a German ship sunk by the Allies at the end of the 2nd world war.
In the island there are also two antres of singular sight with only approach by the sea. The one, the "Spilia tou Vraxou" (the Cave on the Rock) with the stalactites at Aspros Kavos northwestward of Donousa and the other, the Fokospilia at Moschonas Kavos that constitutes covert for seals.
Wassail traditionally together with the natives at the 15th of August, at the 14th of September at the Holy Cross day and at 17 September the day of Saint Sofia. More tensive is the celebration at the 14th of September. At the eve a liturgy is operated and when it ends a big celebration starts and food and drink is offered. In the evening a revel starts at the villages taverns with traditional music.
Traditional also is the celebration of Saint Sofia 3 days later, at the 17th of September at the homonymous church at Mirsini. In the morning the liturgy is operated and the end all the citizens gather at the platan's fount where another beautiful festival is happening.
