The picturesque island of Linmnos is the 8th biggest in Greece, has 17,645 citizens and is at the centre of the North Aegean Sea between Agion Oros, Samothraki, Imbros and Lesbos islands.
Limnos Island is unknown and challenges for your exporation. To enjoy the sea and the sun, to taste the local recipes, to meet its citizens and their hospitality, to search its history that is lost at the depths of the centuries. It bore spiritual men and artists and impressed them by its beauty. It is offered for really peaceful holidays. The deep blue of the sea, the grey of the dry, rocky ground and the white of its villages that is decorated by the brushstrokes of its tiled-roofs are the colors that dominate in Linos Island. It is a volcanic place with wonderful pictures, golden beaches and two lakis that hosted Hephaestus and a history of thousands of years.
Myrina at the westwards is the capital city and port of the island. The city lies over two bays, one port and the Romaic coast. Among them and over a hill towers the imposing Byzantine Castle. The giant walls, the marvelous view and the fawns hiding at the caves of the hill award the visitor that will try the ascension to the Castle, through a path that brings in to mind other seasons. In Myrina you should also visit the Metropolitan Church of the Triune with its two beautiful campaniles and the Archaeological Museum.
Southwestwards there is the famous Diapori, the peacuful beach near Tsimandria village. Northern there is the pictorial areas of Kaspakas and Ssardes with the fold of the famous Kechagiades (commissioners) of Limnos Island. Kontias area is one of the places where you can admire the rocky houses and the deserted windmills while at the east side of the big Bay there is its previous capital city, Moudros. At this picturesque port you will be impressed by Evaggelismos Tis Theotokou Church and by the fantastic shapes of the rocks at the beach of Fanaraki. Here there have been also discovered important troves such as the Petrified Forest, of 20 million years age. Easter there is the most ancient Neolithic settlement in Europe, Poliochni. It was settled 4.000 b.C. and was preserved until 1.600 b.C when it was probably destroyed by Thyra's Island volcano. Northern, between two lakes there is Kontopouli with its beautiful rocky houses. Near it there is Filoctetes Cavern that host the Homeric hero Odysseus and Hephaestia, the most important city of Limnos at the Classical Times with its Greek-Roman Theatre. Don't forget to visit Agiochoma area where the mining of Limnos' ground was operated and as used as the raw materil for the medicines of Hippocrates.
Limnos Island, like the near island of Samothrace is also related to the mystical worship to Kaveiroi, sons of Hephaestus. Remains of the Temple of Kaveiroi have been discovered at the northeastwards of the island. A few kilometers southwards there are Hephaestia, a city dedicated to Hephaestus that prospered during the 5th century b.C. until the time that the island was taken by Athens.
During the first half of August in Myrina there are organized many happenings under the general title of "Anemoessa" At 6th of August, the day of the Metamorphosis of the Savior takes place the biggest celebration of the island and in 23rd of August are been feasted the "Enniamera Tis Theotokou" at Skandali's and Panagia's areas.
Limnos has also a great tradition in tastes. Don't forget to try the characteristic recipe of Limnos "Flomaria" a kind of noodles. Also famous are the wines and cheeses of the island and the local crackers. You should surely by Kalathaki and Melichoro, two local cheeses, the famous ouzo, honey, fancyworks and local sweets as Turkish delights and halva.
